Music is indeed the food of love in this romantic comedy of mirth,
madness, and mischief. From its memorable opening line to its delightful
and satisfying conclusion, Twelfth Night is filled with rich
characters, sharp observations of our human foibles, and intricate
love affairs. It is one of Shakespeare’s acknowledged comic masterpieces
1776
Book by Peter Stone; Music and Lyrics by Sherman Edwards
July 4, 10,
12, 18*, 20*, 25, 27, 31*; August 2*
American history blazes to life right
before your eyes as you watch our nation’s Founding Fathers draft
the Declaration of Independence. Sparks fly as John Adams plots, Thomas
Jefferson writes, George Washington waits on the battlefield, and the
contentious delegates vote, until Ben Franklin saves the day. 1776 is
a riveting musical full of humor, history, and romance. It is also
a truly inspirational event that every American should experience.
Julius
Caesar
by
William Shakespeare
July 5, 11*, 13*, 18, 20, 24*, 26*, 31; August 2
In what is perhaps the greatest political play of all time, Shakespeare
examines the delicate balance between democracy and tyranny. Julius
Caesar is also a highly personal, psychological drama centered around
four of Shakespeare’s most vivid characters – Caesar, Brutus,
Cassius, and Mark Antony – contrasting their private fears and
dreams with the historical events that helped to shape our modern Western
world.
The
Royal Hunt of the Sun
by Peter Shaffer
July 6, 11, 13, 17*, 19*, 24, 26; August 1*, 3*
In the author’s words: “Why did I write The Royal
Hunt? To make color? Yes. To make spectacle? Yes. To make magic?
Yes….to create an experience that was entirely and only theatrical.” This
epic play, written in 1964 by the author of Amadeus, tells
the story of the conquest of the Inca Empire by Pizarro and the Spanish
conquistadors. Although seldom produced because of its daunting challenges, The
Royal Hunt has been called “the greatest play of our generation.”
